Could i still be a Baltimore Police Officer? Drug History but has completely changed/prior military applicant?
Question by cj t: Could i still be a Baltimore Police Officer? Drug History but has completely changed/prior military applicant?
Ok well i am a lance corpral in the marines. Ive been in a little over a year and would love to be a police officer. I am extremely involved in my community and have become pretty religous. Im 19 years old now, and in a short 5 month phase when i was 16 i had used cocain, exctasy, mushrooms, and robotussin. I Know i would be an excellent police officer but it would be horrible to pursue a degree in criminal justice and then be told i cant be one. Will the whole military thing have a big impact? I still have three yrs left in the marines. I really hope some stupid things i did as a 16 yr old wouldnt prevent me from being what i want to be. I also know a few retired baltimore police officers. would that help? well thanks Pleaassee give answers especially cops!

If you just came off the streets and applied for a police officer position and answered yes to the use of cocaine that is almost a automatic disqualification. But considering your military background that makes it a bit of a harder question to answer. I would believe that the police department would highly take into consideration of your military service and what you’ve accomplished and just might overlook the slight drug use. Your best bet is to talk to your squad leader or C.O and ask for advice from him, to be sure he/she would give you a good letter of recommendation when the time comes. Also, it never hurts to call your local police department and talk to someone in charge of recruitment.

Some people will tell you that you can’t ever be a cop (mainly cops who are just a-holes), but some departments will still hire you as long as it has been years since you’ve done it. You just have to show that you have changed. Since you are serving in the Marines, you are showing them that you are a changed man. It will get you extra points on your application. Don’t feel discourage on attending college. I know people who were involved in gangs as kids, but turned their life around and now are police officers. I also know someone is a police officer and had a prior DUI on his record. Five years had to pass since he got his DUI for him to get hired.
