I want to help people and become an Addiction Counselor and help people conquer their dependencies on alcohol
And drugs. Do I have to give up my occasional wine or outdoor BBQ beer to function in this position?

I think you might have to. it would be worth it though because that seems like a very rewarding job

Not at all. You don’t need to give up drinking to work as an addiction counselor.
Good addiction counselors understand that drinking is not bad in itself, but that alcohol addicts have developed a condition that is best managed by avoiding alcohol.
The best thing you can do is learn about addiction and alcoholism. Not just from personal experience, but from people who have dedicated their lives to studying it scientifically. I highly recommend “Alcoholism: The Facts” by Manzardo, Goodwin, et. al. Good luck!
